By: Angelie B. Alimodian Local Students Joins Encampment Encampment is fun, especially for girls who are willing to learn and enjoy outdoor activities. As a girl scout before when I was still studying until now that I have my own students, encampment still interests me and excites me. On September 22-25, 2016, the 34th Council Junior/Senior/Cadet Encampment was held at Camp Lily I. Gamo, Sibulan, Negros Oriental. The encampment was gathered with the theme: Prepared to Learn, Prepared to Lead.” During the day, the girls scouts enjoyed different outdoor activities which developed their leadership skills. And in the evening, socialization and get together where held. The encampment aims not just to mold the girls scouts to be willing to learn all the time but as well as to mold them to become leaders in the near future. By: Angelie B. Alimodian Neophyte Bags Home a Medal in the Sci Dama Competition By: Angelie B. Alimodian Sci Dama is a line of attack and sound addition, subtraction, multiplication and division game between two players that is enjoyed by pupils and students, from classroom to home. But this is another story when we talk about competition. Sci Dama Competition is very challenging especially when it comes to players and coaches who are new in this competition. On September 29, 2016, the Division Science Fair was held with the theme: “Agrinnovate: Revolutionizing Agricultural Outlook for Sustainable Growth.” And I was very thankful for the chance to coach one of our students at Basay National High School to join in the said competition. I felt nervous and intimidated because me and my student was new in joining Sci Dama competition. The competition was very rigid because my fellow coaches and student competitors comes from well-known secondary schools in our division. But it never hindered me and my student to aim for the medals. And luckily with God’s grace and with the effort of my student, at the end of the competition, he won the second place in the Sci Dama competition. I am so proud of you Brian Gaga-a, a Grade 10 student of Basay National High School. By: Alma R. Misajon Aim for Winning? CHESS CLINIC IS THE ANSWER Everyone starts from the threshold of any game before becoming a master. During the competition, the players show their individuals’ ingenuity how to supersede the approaches of his opponent in order to win. Players’ tactics and stragies are resolutely originated and derived from their respective mentors. For the enhancement and augmentation of players’ performance, Chess Clinic had been opened to cater the needs of all the chess players to further develop their knowledge and skills as prerequisite to become a chess master. The Chess Clinic was conducted at Bayawan East Central School last August 8-9, 2016 with different activities accomplished during the whole duration of the seminar. Jan Kayla Anlap, Mona Marcelo and Brian Gaga-a were the selected students of Basay National High School participated and noted that the seminar was also intended to help future chess masters gain self-confidence, self-esteem, discipline, maturity, and foster camaraderie among themselves. During clinic sessions, participants learned basic chess moves as well as complicated techniques like the triangulation method and the different types of tactics. By: Willa A. Onganon Unfolding the reasons of Students’ Behavior on Absenteeism in School Lingering in my mind some of the queries on the intolerable behavior of students toward their study and yet no intensive study done to draw proofs of their behaviors. I have been noticed over the years the dramatic and exponential increase number of students on absenteeism or non-appearance in the school but upon visitation of their individual school records shows that no conclusive and substantial evidences provided in order to derive believable conclusion. While searching on the internet of the various reasons, different factors surfaced and these are the following: 1. Phobic Adolescence: During this stage in the growth of a teen, there is a lot of fear developed as a result of physical changes of the body for example growth of pimples, turbulent emotions e.t.c. This scares teens away from school. 2. Lack of Interest: Students could be lacking interest in the study, which could be as a result of content that is difficult for them to grasp hence pushing them away from school. 3. Teacher approach: The approach used by teachers may not be understood by the student and this could lead them to lose interest in school. Punitive attendance policy plays a big role in absenteeism too. 4. Pamperness from the family: Students who get excessive pocket money from their families are most likely to absent themselves from school since they need time to spend the money. 5. Private Couching: Flexible private couching encouraged by some parents could drive a number of students away from the conventional school timetable. 6. Diseases: Some diseases like asthma which requires attention and care as well as an environment that is warm and not dusty could make students remain home. 7. School Infrastructural Facilities: Lack of libraries, sports facilities is a hindrance to attendance of school among students. 8. Entertainment: Accessibility of entertainment facilities like cinemas could divert attention of some students from school. (Keter,2013) Each teacher should be aware on the different factors that cause absenteeism and let me advise them to conduct comprehensive assessment of their students so that resolution will immediately follow to solve the behavioral problem directly observes from students toward school. THROWBACK!!! The Grandeur that was Science Park Every year , the science department together with math have made its annual activities, the so called Science and Math Celebration wherein all students are given opportunities to take in various activities. One of the highlights are the street parade wherein all school year levels are in their respective costumes. And of course, to be more colorful, the beauty and brain contest for Mr & Ms Science and Math was presented for which candidates showed their talents and skills based on their knowledge and experiences relating to their studies. Other activities are quiz bowl, ball games, parlor games, and other colorful events such as slow bike racing, egg dropping and many more. The major concepts of this event is to enhance students’ understanding of the theories involved during class discussion and in doing the activities will concretize or operationalize their intellectual capacity in order to be more aware of the relevance and importance of science. Those were some highlights of Science Park. Now, it’s gone. But the legacy of science park remains in our hearts and mind. It’s hard for the science teachers to forget what was being started, but, we have to face the reality and that is because, “time is always changing.” The known science park becomes the destination of Senior High School.
